  1. I live in Bukidnon, particularly in Manolo Fortich and I always ride that bus whenever I go to Cagayan de Oro City for school everyday…

Bukidnon! Brilliant isn’t it! I saw your video about Bukidnon… It’s just a small part of Bukidnon, though… I hope you will explore more areas of it…

  2. Hi Mitch Suan – I love Bukidnon – it is one of my favorite parts of Mindanao. Yeah, that video that I had is just into a small part of the Province, but don’t worry, I have really toured all over Bukidnon – from Talakag to Maramag, Manolo to Valencia, and all points in between! It’s a great place!

  3. Anthony R.Ang says:

Good Morning Sir Bob,,, it’s so nice we have people like you and Mae,,, who keeps us always posted with all the news in our native land. I used to live in Valencia city, Bukidnon and used to travel from Cagayan to Davao city. You know what ???? I really really miss all those sceneries, that’s why my day is not done without checking your post. Keep posting guys….

  4. Wow Bob great photo, this sends me back in time to when i used to travel between Davao and Cagayan de Oro during the mid 90′s.

I was in my early twenties then and boy do i love traveling via Buda to CdO and vice versa, despite the frequent tire burts, the rough and dusty roads and the god foresaken bus station toilets at Maramag.

You see i travel from CdO to Davao on early Friday evening and return to CdO on Sunday via Buda using Rural Transit buses.

Maramag although not exactly the halfway point of the journey it is here that when the bus stops to alight or take passengers more often than not is also the time when either my bladder or bowels want to “express” itself.

Hence i have to use the toilet facilities. I think I’ve traveled this route at least ten times in a span of 5 months and there is not an instance that the toilets in that bus station had lights on at night.

To let you know how dark it is inside, a fight broke out between two men at one point because one had peed onto the other’s trouser leg thinking he was facing the urinal.

Sometimes to avoid having to use the facilities there i would try very hard to doze off after Calinan if i’m from Davao or from Malaybalay if i’m from CdO.

There was even a time i was so desperate to get home on Friday that i had the bus driver agree for me to sit on top of the engine cover between him and the front row seats. The buses then were not the same as the one in the photo. Although it also had two entrance doors the forward one was behind the front axel and the aft one was before the rear axel and the engine was in front not at the rear.

It was fun then, but i’m sure i’d been one of the people dead on the spot if that bus had a head on collision or fell of a ravine as i sat there on top of the engine cover.

    Ahhh those were the days….

  5. Hi Anthony – We are happy to keep you posted!

Hi Eric – You would be surprised how much that route has improved since the 90′s. For one thing, it is paved all the way now, with good roads! There are even good bathrooms and good restaurants too along the way now.

Thanks for sharing your experiences!

  6. Jose Porfirio says:

Greetings from New England. Nice photo of my favorite bus. My girlfriend and I used to ride that bus going to Cagayan de Oro from Davao City. Favorite stopping place is Valencia City in Bukidnon. Nice restaurants..clean bathrooms. Keep posting those “wandafuhl pitchuh”, my friend. Shalom.
    Jose

  7. Hi Jose Porfirio – Nice to hear from you, my friend! I’ve done some bus riding around Mindanao myself, but not on this particular route! I always drove when I went to CdO from Davao!

  8. Hi Bob & Mae,

  9. hi…how much is the fare to cagayan from davao? my friends are planning to visit cagayan de oro city. Thank you

  10. Hi Bob. I am planning a trip to the Pearl Farm on October with my children from Cagayan de Oro. I have checked the airlines and found there is actually no flights straight to Davao from CDO and we have to go through Cebu first. Anyway, question: how about going to Davao by land? Are the buses any good? How safe are they? Would you recommend traveling by bus to a mother with 4 children? Or should I just take the plane??? Looking forward to your suggestions.

  11. Hi Soul – I would certainly take the bus. Not only is it safe and also less expensive, it’s one of the most beautiful drives I’ve experienced.

  12. To Rural Transit Mindanao,Inc.- i’m very dispointed to your company about giving birth one of your regular passenger of Rural Bus Transit Plate number 9256, origin Pagadian City to Zamboanga City on June 7, 2008 about 10:00 AM,and she give birth a Baby Boy inside the Rural Bus, she came from Tugawan Guilinan going to Zamboanga City with her mother and Mr. Arthur Doller a RTMI Ipil Supervisor on Board and he told my sister-in-law the mother of a Baby Boy MARICOR RISADA go to RTMI to give a financial assisstance.
After One month of giving Birth they came here at Rural Transit Mindanao, Inc. office pagadian Branch and Mr. Branch Manager he gave him a P500 hundred pesos & one way pases.
The Manegement that the way you treat your regular passenger who want your help…

Thanks & More Power to your company.

  13. Hi Fred – to me, RTMI has no responsibility for the kid! The bus certainly didn’t make the girl pregnant after all. Having a baby aboard the bus does not given them any responsibility for the kid, after all. She should be happy to get P500 and a bus pass! Just my opinion.

  14. AGNES MASCARINAS says:

    GOOD DAY
mAY WE KNOW THE CONTACT NUMBER OF RURAL TOUR BUS OFFICE IN DAVAO CITY? THANKS

  15. Hi! Need your help, my family of 4 are going to Davao this Nov 15-18. We are getting the Manila-Davao and CDO-Manila flights.

    1. From davao airport, how do we get to Pearl Farm?
    2. From Davao, which bus, how much and how long would the trip be if we’re going to CDO City?
    3. From CDO – how do we get to Camiguin? and how much would the fare be and how long would the trip take?
    3. From Camiguin- how do we get back to CDO Airport?

Would really appreciate your directions and help on this matter. Thanks a lot!

  16. Hi Viviene – The people from Pearl Farm should be willing to pick you up at the airport and take you to their place. Just try to arrange this with them, it’s a fairly standard service.

There are many buses that run from Davao to CdO, just go to the Overland Terminal in Ecoland and you can have your choice of buses. Sorry, I don’t know the price, as I always drive my own vehicle to CdO. I would guess it is maybe P300 or so per passenger. Perhaps somebody with knowledge on this will post a follow up comment.

You should be able to catch a bus that will take you from CdO to the terminal and on the ferry to Camiguin. Don’t know the fare, but it is probably 2 hours or so, including the boat.

  18. hi Bob =) i just want to ask if it is safe to have a night land travel through rural bus line, from dipolog to zamboanga city. taking into account the recent news, i mean the safetyness of travel from the milf rebels?

  19. @meme: I think it would be ok.

  20. hello. i will be taking a vacation to visit my boyfriends family in cagayan de oro. i was just wondering if they have any tour busses going to davao and approximately how much they range to.

    thanks!!

  21. @jenny, there are multiple vans available that you can rent . 5k one-way is a reasonable amount for the rental. those vans are parked beside the bus terminal in agora.

@meme , travelling at night is safe. and its much faster. it takes about 5 hrs only.

  22. hi

im so glad atlast i can give comments now with regards to rural transit.well some of the employee from this said corporation, some are not well trained, and dedicated to their task.to be honest with you some are not arrogant specialy inspectors and drivers…..from cagayan to pagadian.are some drivers are USERS?

  23. hi bob!

its very unfair for as a zamboanguena.some terminals are well concrete and safe for as….and base on my observation zamboanga terminal located in guiwan is not well concrete than the other teminal like pagadian etcccccccccccccccc.so being a zambuangena you should have to take action with regards to the place…..

  24. Hi Bob,

I’m planning to go to Camiguin although right now, i have no idea what will be the best route to take. I heard there are ferries going from Cagayan de Oro, Butuan and even Bohol. Can you please give me an idea which of these is the best one to take and how much it would cost me?

Also, a little help on the hotel/resort to go to would be much appreciated. Me and my girlfriend are backpackers and we’re not into the swanky hotels…

    Thanks a lot!

  25. @jools: The most common way to get to Camiguin is by ferry from Balingoan. I am not aware of any boats from Cagayan de Oro to Camiguin, if people say that they are probably referring to Balingoan, which is 30 minutes to an hour from CdO.

Sorry, I don’t have any suggestions for places to stay there.

  26. i would like to ask that why dipolog base has small salary

  27. to rural transit mindanao inc. i am a regular passenger and i appreciate the
service you give to the people here in mindanao.but i would like to comment
on the attitude of your bus conductors.i happen to ride from cagayan to ozamiz and the bus conductor didn’t give me my ticket despite repeatedly asking him for it as my receipt and as a proof that i have paid.eventually,he gave it to me when we arrived at mukas.it is my right as a passenger to ask for it as soon as i paid.he was very rude the way he responded and was not showing any respect at all.i hope you will look into this matter for your company’s betterness.

    More power!

  28. I want to travel by bus (Rural Transport Mindanao?) from Davao to Dipolog.. but it is until now unclear how to do so. I suppose i have to go to Cagayan d’Oro first and continue my trip to Dipolog from there.
    Anybody there who knows more?
The Web isn’t very helpful until now (or i am a bit clumsy in searching).
    Old age maybe (69 yrs).
    thanks in advance, Andreas

  39. Hi Bob,

I’m from Manila and I had a great experience with my land travel in Mindanao back in the ’90s. I particularly enjoyed Bukidnon. Next month, me and my co-workers will be going to Davao via CDO. Unfortunately, my Mindanao adventure was too long ago and can’t quite remember the route. Just wondering if you can help us out with the land route from CDO to Davao? We’re driving our own vehicle. Also, is it safe to travel at night?

Looking forward to your response. Thanks!

  40. Hi Bob,

    Great site!

Any thoughts on the Eastern coast of Mindanao? I’m planning a solo motorbike ride with the ff details:

Leg 1 (a definite must!): CDO – DAVAO (via Bukidnon)
Leg 2 (undecided at the moment): maybe east of Davao to Surigao via the eastern coastal road from Bislig-Tandag-Surigao.

At this point, I prefer to ride around Mindanao rather than back track through the route I came from. I’m considering camping alone in Mt. Apo and maybe somewhere along the Cagayan Valley, do you think this is a good idea?

    Thanks Bob!

    • Hi Anton – Best advice on that Bislig-Tandag-Suriaso route is to be prepared for some rough, rough roads. It won’t be a smooth trip.

Cagayan Valley? That’s in Northern Luzon! Are you sure you are talking about Cagayan Valley, or somewhere near Cagayan de Oro (which is not anywhere near the Cagayan Valley).

  41. HI Bob,

My mistake, I must have been smoking something else at the time! I meant Compostela Valley.

As for the Bislig-Tandag-Surigao trip, thanks for the heads up. I’m just looking for a stretch of Mindanao road that offers a great view of the Pacific Ocean (if you have any in mind, let me know!)

Lastly, would you know if there are areas in Mt. Apo where a solo motorcycle rider can camp by the bike, other than a parking lot?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Anton – If you want a view of the Pacific Ocean, the road you mentions – Bislig-Tandag-Surigao is the road you want. There is no other road with a view of the Pacific Ocean.

On the camping.. I’m sorry, but I am not a camper, so I don’t have any information to share with you there.

  42. Sir Bob,

We would like to ask how much is the bus rental from cagayan de oro to davao city that will accommodate 80 people on October 20 – 22, 2009. Sir, where can we contact you for the details and arrangements?

Hope to hear from you as soon as possible. Thank you sir.

    Nina,
    Operations Manager

  43. Hello,

does anyone know what rural transit’s earliest departure from cagayan de oro to dipolog city?

    tnx!

  44. Noraisa Draper Moniva says:

    Sir Bob,
Good Day! I was passenger of your Bus since when i am in College here in USM Kabacan, North Cotabato.
I was wondering why some of your Conductor and Dispatcher is not that good. I mean sometimes they are bossy which is not good.
Anyway some of your Conductors is not honest. For instance when the passenger from Kabacan went to Tacurong they are not going to give them the ticket but they collect the fare. And if the inspector will ride that is the time that the conductor will issue the ticket but not from Kabacan. Sometimes they will only put in the stab from Datu Paglas to Tacurong but i paid for the ticket from Kabacan to Tacurong…tsk tsk tsk…
And sometimes i tried to send some baggage from Kabacan to Tacurong they were not going to give me the ticket of my baggage but i paid the baggage. Is that the proper way, i mean i paid, but the ticket that supposed for me will not be given?thanks a lot…hoping for the answer..

    • Noraisa – Why would you think it is “my bus”? All I did is take a picture of the bus, nothing else. I don’t own it, I am in no way associated with it. Do you own everything you have ever taken a picture of?

  45. sir gd am hope you can accomodate the soldiers free fare to your bus that is our only wish so that we can bring to our family a pasalubong, we are hoping that sir….

  46. Hi,
Had a chance to visit Philippines and your province last month. I liked it very much. Specially the scenery along the road between Mindnao and Cagayan de oro.. all green and winding roads offered very good view . I liked eating good quality bananas on a road side stall .. BEST LUCK TO YOU ALL

  47. i want to inquire the scheduke of trips from cdo to malaybalay, bukidnon and vice versa

  48. Hi.. just wondering..
my best friend and I need to know how long it takes for this bus to reach davao from CDO? thanks.

  54. Hi Bob,
I would appreciate to receive informaton about travelling to cdo-bukidnon-dvo city.
My gf”s family and 7 of us intend to hire a van to go to davao city from cdo early december, 2009.
Is it advisable to rent a private van?
How much will be the total cost to drop in davao city? (toll fee/driver batta/fuel charges etc)
Is it safe for forigner to travel on this highway?
We plan to spend one night in malabalay city which my gf belongs to and then continue to davao the next day.
Thank you very much in advance.

    • Hi philip – I have never hired a service like that, as I have my own vehicle, so I don’t really know the price. I would guess it might be P4k to P6k for a trip like that CdO to Davao. You can also ride a public vehicle like a van for only P500 or P600. Yes, that highway is very safe, you don’t need to worry about that.

      Enjoy your journey!

  55. hi there! i’m irish from davao city. im going to USM Kabacan next week. hearing about the massacre gives me stomachs in the tummy… but since i need to be there @ 9 in the morning, wat would you suggest? riding on bus? or taking a public van? and please tell me wat time i should take a ride. thanks!

  56. Bob, you surely are one of a kind. For a foreigner like you sharing experiences with your travel to Mindanao like a true blooded local makes me admire your kind.To think local people are the ones asking the infos to a foreigner like you…native Filipinos should study these places.Bawal maging dayuhan sa sariling bayan, so to speak!

  57. Hello Bob! I’m in CDO right now and just want to ask some infos re getting to DIPOLOG CITY from here…… How many hours it will take? Nice and helpful site :)

  58. hi bob! i came across your website by coincidence and i’m really impressed that a foreigner like you would know so much about bukidnon/mindanao and have become instrumental in promoting it not only to foreigners, but even filipinos. agree with jing, what you’re doing is really commendable!!!

i understand you’re getting some inquiries about private vans/cars for rent, these parts of the country. hope you don’t mind my recommending a reliable and trustworthy van/car rental company in cagayan de oro city, MERTZ RENT-A-CAR. owner is boyet, and he can be reached thru email: boyet@mertzrentacar.tk or mobile: (0927) 815-8150. those interested may also visit their website: http://www.mertzrentacar.tk. MERTZ’ rates are super reasonable and services are reliable and trustworthy. hope this info will help those who visit your site who are in need of transpo services.

thanks again for everything you’re doing for mindanao, the philippines, and the filipinos! mabuhay ka!!!

  59. Hi Bob, this is a nice site you’ve got here and I think I speak for a lot of people in saying I really appreciate having your posts as a guide for travel in Mindanao.

A friend and I are planning to go to Davao and Cagayan de Oro, but our problem is getting from one place to another.

We’re going to Davao City by plane and from there we have no idea where we can get on a Rural Transit bus. Any idea where the nearest terminal might be?

Also, would you know how long the bus ride would be?

    Thanks a bunch!

    • Hi Kat – I’m glad that you enjoy my site and find it useful. The Davao Bus Terminal is in Ecoland, not far from SM City. If you just catch a Taxi and ask to go to the bus terminal, they will know where to take you.

The bus ride from Davao to CdO is about 7 hours or so. It’s a beautiful trip too!

      Enjoy your stay in Mindanao!

  60. Hi Bob , just returning from iligan , i was lloking for : bus from Davao to iligan ,

  61. Hi Jaer214- we will be going to Camuguin this October. So nice to see your comment that there is a ferry from CDO that goes directly to Camiguin.
Just want to ask from CDO Airport, where should we go straight to ride the ferry going to Camiguin? We will leave at manila 8:15 am and our ETA at CDO is 9:45 am. Would really appreciate your help. Thanks

Hi Bob- Thanks for this wonderful site. I Became interested with Bukidnon. That would be our next place to visit. Also, if you have an idea on how we can ride to the ferry going to Camiguin from CDO Airport. We really need anybody’s assistance on these. Thanks

  62. i commend bob for being very acquainted with our native land.. ;) thank you. i was just checking for the means of travelng from davao to cdo to dpolog. i got the information i need.

  63. hello people! why not include in your itineraries the province of surigao del sur and surigao del norte. you will see the long stretch of a national highway along the coastal towns facing the pacific oceans plus the many white beaches (less populated) and falls that you can retire, the many islets to enjoy. the road from butuan city to tandag, surigao del sur is via san francisco, agusan del sur is now fully paved. and from tandag to surigao city, you only have to pass less than 20km rough/ dusty ride with its on-going road pavement construction. its really beautiful and you can enjoy the fresh fish products sold in every restaurant.

  64. hello, I’m goin to general santos city this coming june. After i visit there,im goin to cagayan de oro, is there any bus goin to cagayan de oro from general santos city?

  71. antonette venzon says:

be careful when taking you night trip going to CDO.
I dont feel safe in rural transit anymore.
i was a victim of hold up in rural transit last july 12, monday.
and i really think the driver should be blamed, if not because of his negligence nothing bad would have happened.

i know that they are not suppose to get passengers on the road, specially at night. and there’s a policy that they should only get passengers at designated bus stations.

i ask that the Rural Transit management constantly remind their employees about safety. They should remember that the life of all the passengers are in their hands and we the passengers trust our lives to them. I also suggest that Rural Transit ask for the assistance of the PNP in providing check points along the highway specifically in Purok 1 maramag area (if i remember it correctly). Im sure that police visibility will prevent hold up insidents if these criminals are aware that there are police check points.

i hope no one will go through the same thing. it is really very sacry and traumatic.
it could have been a lot worst.

  72. To Gigi – The last time I travelled to Davao City from CDO City, the rates were Php 490 (4-stop; 0430H – 1800H) and Php 550 (non-stop; 1800H – 2200H). I hope they did not increased their rates. It has become kinda difficult to pull bills from the pocket nowadays.

To Antonette – Were you on a non-air bus? I’ve travelled CDO-DVO and vice versa via Buda route a couple of times during the night – last trips most of the time at 2200H. I did notice once during my first and only ride on a non-air bus that it stopped to pick up passengers in between designated pick-up/drop points. Thus, I swore never to be on that type of bus ever again. However, aircon buses have offered better security and faster travels during night trips as long as you sleep during the course of the trip and never mind the vehicle running in the middle of two lanes at a speed I think around 100 kph.

And lastly guys, before the trip, never forget to pray for your safety and pray for the driver and the conductor as well to whom you have entrusted your trip.

  73. Hi Bob! I’m so glad I saw your site as my friends and I will be going on a Mindanao trip this week (Aug 19 to be exact!)! We are planning to visit CDO, Camiguin, and Bukidnon.

So our initial plan is to have a day trip at Bukidnon only, but it seems there is a lot to see there. Could you give some nice places we could check out? In your opinion, is a day tour enough for Bukidnon? Appreciate if you could send me an email for a great itinerary. Thanks!

Also, I’ll be going to Davao (while my friends will be going back to Manila) and my question is, would it be better if I travel from Bukidnon to Davao? Will the travel time be faster (compared to a bus ride from CDO to Davao)? Hope anyone would be nice enough to help. :)

    • hello zero – to go to Davao from CdO, you will pass through Bukidnon. It is just along the way. There is a different route you can take which does not pass through Bukinon, but the most direct route between the two cities passes directly through Bukidnon. You can certainly spend much more than a day exploring Bukidnon.

      Enjoy your trip!

I just want to address this complain to the management of Rural transit Bus ,route via davao to cagayan particularly body bus number 2394. I am a regular passenger of your transit .I am really disappointed today because I was not able to reach in my destination on time because the conductor and the rest of the crew drop by Lacson area to buy Durian. The time spent is more than 30 minutes in which it caused much delay for me to reach my working place. Hope you will address this complain

    Hi there!

I will be in Cagayan de Oro on May 9-12. From there, I will make a trip to General Santos City. What is the best way to get to GenSan from CdO? It will be my first trip to Mindanao. Thank you for your invaluable feedback!

    • Hi Percival – I hope you enjoy your trip. Bus would be the most practical way. You can travel either via Davao or Kidapawan, either one would be good.

  81. Hi BOB…

Could you tell me the times and quickest route on Rural Transit from Davao to Bukidnon ( Valencia City )

I want to make DAV to VC a regular trip, I would arrive at Davao Airport at around 2pm on a Wednesday.

    • I am sorry Rinzi, but I am just a guy who took a photo of a bus. I do not have the information you are looking for, and do not have the time to do the research for you.

      Enjoy your trip, though.

    • Jean- this is not Rural Transit’s site. I’m just a guy who took a picture of a bus and published it on my site. I really don’t know what their schedule is.
